Chapter Thirty-Nine
Towards the Franks
As the morning had not passed too far, they left at once on the road towards Lutetia.
For a full fifteen days they journeyed. Each night they easily found inns, thanks to Rodorâs local knowledge. He took care to interview carefully each of their hosts, often plying them with their own ale to ensure their tongues were loose enough. They were more than pleased to find guests for whom a ready supply of gold did not seem to be a problem.
At the breaking of their fast on the morning of the fifteenth day, Rodor addressed them all, âAccording to all I hear, we will enter Frankish territory sometime today. They occasionally come to this place and trade. They have given assurances to the town elders that, while they intend to take this land soon, they will treat the townspeople kindly, provided they are not opposed.â
This was the moment they had all been waiting for. Excitedly they undid all their packs, decorating their horses with the bunting and bells, mounting pennants on their spears, and dressing themselves in the finery they had brought. They gathered a large crowd of onlookers, âNever seen anybody done up like that!â shouted one from the crowd.
âIâve never been done up like this!â replied Rodor, laughing, as he donned an expensive heavy yellow silk cloak, embroidered and embossed with pictures of exotic animals and dragons.
Eventually, the preparations were complete, and they all mounted, Rodor first, Claennis and Ardith riding abreast, and Deogol bringing up the rear. As they rode away the crowd broke into spontaneous applause. The four just could not help smiling and waving, as if their royal status had been known all along.
